The first thing that you need to understand is that, although some dogs are well-suited for being outside in the colder weather, other dogs are not going to be able to handle it as nicely. Even if the dog is a cold-weather dog, if it spends the majority of its time indoors, it is not going to have what is necessary in order to survive the cold. When the temperature drops outside, it is important to keep your dogs indoors as much as possible. If it is necessary for you to leave them outdoors for any length of time, they should have a sheltered area where they can get away from the cold and wind whenever possible. It is also a good idea to keep a hot water bottle in those areas so that it gives them a warm place to lie down.
Another problem that can occur in some areas has to do with frozen lakes and ponds. Although it may be amusing to see a dog go out on one of these ponds, it can be quite tragic if they happen to fall through the ice. Just as it is difficult for humans to get out of the water when they have fallen through the ice, it is difficult for a dog as well. If you want to have them out on the lake, be certain that you keep them on a very long lead, perhaps a lightweight rope so that if the unthinkable should happen, you would be able to pull them out easily.
If you're the type of person that trains your dogs regularly, you'll want to pay close attention to the amount of time that is spent outdoors during this activity. For example, dog training in New Jersey or Denver at the coldest times of year should cause you to limit how much time you're outside. If your dog gets overheated, it can lead to illness and it can be difficult for your dog to remain outside in an overheated condition. Either bring the dog indoors to train them or train them outdoors in small batches of time.
Finally, pay close attention to your dog's feet during the wintertime. You may not consider the fact that your dog's feet are generally unprotected and in certain conditions, such as when broken ice is about, it can easily lead to their pads getting cut. Be sure that you inspect their feet regularly and take the necessary action to protect their health.
