For those of you who are not already familiar with fenders

Historically, fenders were originally woven from hemp rope and this type of fender is still used today by some historical boat and ship owners. However, modern fenders are commonly constructed from either rubber, foam elastomer, or plastic. In addition, the proper size and shape of fender for your particular vessel depends on its weight, its displacement, the maximum allowable stand-off between your boat's hull and the structure to which you are docked, and the structure of the dock or berth itself. In addition, boat fenders are available in many different types, shapes, and sizes to accommodate vessels of every size from small fishing boats to supertankers. For instance, there are cylindrical fenders, ball, hinged, hole-through-the-middle, lightweight elastomer foam, arch, cell, cone, pneumatic, hydro-pneumatic, square, wing, keyhole, tug boat and D fenders. In addition, some of these fenders are designed to be permanently attached to a dock, quay, or piling while other types are designed to be portable so that they can be carried onboard the boat or ship and deployed only when approaching a dock, a berth, or another ship. Plus, some of these pieces of kit are designed to be deployed on the side of the boat or ship and others are designed to be deployed at the bow or stern. However, for the average person who owns the average sized fishing boat, sail boat, or yacht, the most common type of fender is either a cylindrical or ball shaped, air filled, plastic bladder that is deployed only when approaching the dock or berth. In addition, this type of fender ranges in price from 10.00 to 200.00 and can be purchased at any boating supply store. However, before purchasing a set for your particular craft, it is good idea to discuss the size and type of vessel you have with a knowledgeable shop assistant at the boating supply store where you purchase your equipment so that you can be reasonably certain that you are purchasing the best style available for your particular vessel. Consequently, using fenders on your boat will prevent, or at least minimize, any damage that it may receive when docking and thus, they are a wise and inexpensive investment when compared to the cost of having any docking damage that may occur to your boat professionally repaired.
